Mushroom coffee. When I speak these words to the average Starbucks, Kenco and Nescafé drinker, I’m met with squished up faces, and head shakes with comments like “Mushrooms?! In coffee?”.
This reaction is not unusual and a year ago, I would have had the same gut reaction.
However, in my quest to remove toxins from my body and with the realisation this would also include the removal of coffee (god forbid), I went in search of a healthy alternative.
Research suggests that while coffee can boost the metabolism, prevent Alzheimer’s, and lower the risk of depression, it can also cause insomnia and anxiety. This is not good for someone like me who is naturally very energetic and can definitely fall into the trap of overthinking at times. I’ve been compared to a chipmunk on steroids when I have something on my mind – running all over the place. The addition of coffee can be both a hilarious and frantic concoction to the mix.
While on the hunt for something healthy that could still provide me with my morning boost, I came across Four Sigmatics. They are a Finnish based brand, who seem to be leading the way in the Mushroom Coffee space. They state that their coffee can help boost brain power and productivity without the nasty side effects a usual coffee would provide.
The mushroom coffee has been tried and tested… by me
I was a little nervous giving mushroom coffee a try. I mean, who would have thought it? Mushrooms… in coffee?
I’ve tried and have been drinking since the beginning of the year, their Lions Mane and Chaga coffee and honestly, I wouldn’t go back. The coffee doesn’t taste like mushrooms at all and is blended with rich organic arabica coffee beans to give you a rich and creamy coffee taste.
It’s not just me on this mushroom bandwagon mind, everyone from elite athletes, to Tim Ferriss, to nutritionists, authors, and even professional dancers have found the benefits and taste of the mushroom coffee to be great.
I have mine in the mornings before work to help give me a fantastic productivity boost without the mid-morning crash I’m normally used to with a regular coffee. Paired with my normal mindful practice, I’m off to a great start. Check out our three ways to reduce stress article.
On top of that, if you’re avoiding caffeine, they also have caffeine free versions of their mushroom elixirs, which are also delicious and offer similar benefits to their main mushroom coffee.
How to use
The mixture comes in a sachet which you simply tear open, pour into your mug, add hot water and milk (I have mine with coconut milk) and you’re done. No faffing needed which is fantastic for those, like me, who barely make it to the kettle with their eyes open in the morning.
Why choose Four Sigmatics
Four Sigmatics are passionate about bringing healthy alternatives into our diets. They take every care in growing and harvesting the mushrooms to provide us with the great taste you’ll soon be accustomed to.
And, did you know that mushrooms are one of the world’s most well-studied superfoods and are jam-packed with amazing benefits?
Chaga- Antioxidant Properties
Chaga mushroom can help support immune functions. It is called the king of mushrooms. You’ll find growing naturally in the wild and it has antioxidant properties.
Lion’s Mane – Brain and Nervous System
Lion’s Mane is an all-natural cognitive enhancer. It has been shown to support memory and concentration.
Reishi – Stress and Sleep
If you have occasional stress and difficulty sleeping, Reishi mushroom can help you relax and get a good night sleep.
Cordyceps – Energy and Performance
Cordyceps is an adaptogen, not a stimulant, so it helps you produce and maintain steady energy levels. Coffee can give you an energy spike, followed by a crash; cordyceps, on the other hand, helps your body produce its own energy.
Plus, mushrooms don’t just benefit our bodies’ internal environment. They can also improve the health of the ecosystems on which our very survival relies.
In an interview with Food Republic, the Founder Tero Isokauppila shared his vision for Mushroom Coffee and how he hopes it will become commonplace in people’s diets.
All of Four Sigmatics products are vegan-friendly, gluten and dairy free.
Of course, I wouldn’t mention something like this without being able to help our readers out. So, until the end of the month, if you use the coupon code wehackhealth at checkout, you’ll get 10% off your first purchase of Four Sigmatic’s products.
Happy shopping and post in the comments below your experience with mushroom coffee.
