I love to travel, but while visiting new places, I sometimes wonder how people ever managed to survive in strange locations without the help of smartphones. I wonder whether I’d be as willing to embark upon new adventures without the help of Google Maps to make sure that I never get lost.
Travel is big business, and tech companies are currently working on a whole host of exciting new products that will help make our future trips to new places even more enjoyable. Google is now working on a set of headphones that will translate languages in real-time and Cryptocurrencies could make worrying about having local currency a thing of the past over the next few years.
The future for tech and travel is exciting, but in this article, we’re focusing on the here and now. Whether you’re planning a city break, going on holiday or about to travel around the world, our five essential Tech gadgets for travel will make your trip much more enjoyable.
Please let us know in the comments below what your essential travel items are.
No matter how neatly you pack your clothes into your suitcase or bag, you know that they are going to be a wrinkled mess by the time you reach your destination. You then have two options. You can either rock those wrinkles or hope that the place you’re staying at has an iron that you can use. But you’re not out of the woods yet! Hotel irons are notoriously bad, so even if they do have one available, you may end up having to rock those wrinkles anyway. Not a good look for all those holiday pics and selfies!
Enter the iSteam. A portable travel steamer that will get rid of the wrinkles in your clothes within minutes. I bought one last year, and it is a game changer. I paid over $100 (£75) for my domestic iron, and this thing works just as good, and it costs less than $50 (£40)!!!
If you’re like me, you probably travel with a wide range of gadgets that unfortunately aren’t equipped with a strong enough battery to last all day. External Battery Packs are the perfect solution to this problem.
The Mophie range of External Battery packs are approved by leading electronics manufacturers such as Apple and Samsung. This is important because cheaper, poorly built battery packs can send too much charge into your devices causing damage to the internal components. Ever wondered why the battery on your smartphone declines over time? It’s probably because you’ve been plugging it into the USB port of a device which doesn’t control how much electrical current is being to your phone. This results in overheating and a damaged battery. You won’t have this problem if you use a Mophie External Battery pack. All you need to do is plug your device into the pack, and you’re good to go. You can use it to charge almost anything and you can even use the devices while they are charging.
Regular Cameras aren’t built to capture the most magical moments of our holidays while we’re underwater, riding Rollercoasters or travelling through extreme environments. Not only can regular cameras be easily damaged if dropped, but they’re also not cut out for being exposed to water, sand or snow. The GoPro Hero 6 enables you to capture the most memorable moments from your holiday in stunning 4K HD.
I’ve had a GoPro for a few years now and there’s no greater feeling than watching the footage back and seeing the look on your children’s faces as you play with them in the pool or ride their favorite rollercoaster with them.
The GoPro Hero 6 is awesome, but there are a few accessories I highly recommend in order to get the most out of it. The first accessory I recommend is the Three Way Grip. It’s called the Three Way because you can easily transform it into a hand grip, tripod or selfie stick style extended hand grip within a matter of minutes. The Three Way is perfect for when you need to keep a tight grip on your GoPro. Like when you’re in the water or riding theme park attractions.
If you’re planning on recording in 1080p or 4K, I also recommend picking up a Dual Battery Charger and some Spare Batteries because the GoPro tends to run out of charge very quickly. This is an unfortunate side effect of being able to capture stunning 4K footage and 1080p video at up to 240 frames per second.
The Apple Airpods are brilliant. They are one of those life-changing gadgets that you don’t even realise you need until you have them. They work great on all Apple and Android devices.
When I first saw the Apple Airpods I never thought that I’d actually end up owning a pair. The thought of having wireless headphones was appealing because I find wires very annoying, but I didn’t wear headphones that much so I didn’t see the point in paying $150 (£115) for something I wouldn’t use very often.
Then last year I was shopping around for a wireless headset so that I could talk to guests on my Podcast without having to worry about staying close to a traditional microphone. To my surprise I found that many reviews online pointed to the Apple Airpods as having the best audio quality. At first, I was sceptical, but one Saturday afternoon I decided to pick up a pair, and I’ve never looked back.
I now wear my Apple Airpods ALL THE TIME. They are amazing. They have helped me discover Podcasts and Audiobooks, and they are truly life-changing. You can keep one Airpod in, and they still sound great. This is perfect for when you’re working around the house, and you need to listen out for the kids, or when you take a dog for a walk, and you need to be aware of your surroundings.
One of my favourite things about the Apple Airpods is how you can start and stop what you’re listening to with a simple tap of your ear. I’ve always found it to be a little rude of me to walk around with headphones on, in case someone needed to speak to me. The Airpods solve this problem. Now all I have to do is tap my ear and whatever I am listening to will pause in an instant. I can then give people my full attention.
The Apple Airpods are one of those things that you will love, but it’s hard to appreciate how much you’ll like them without giving them a try. They are perfect for travelling because you can keep one Airpod in while you’re on an airplane, train or bus, and still be aware of your surroundings because your other ear will be free. They are brilliant.

The Sony RX100 Mark 6 delivers DSLR quality pictures and impressive 4K video recording with multiple different settings and frame rates to choose from.
