As someone who used to find literally any excuse to avoid peeling myself away from Netflix & lounging around the house, it has been quite a stretch to learn how to start from scratch and motivate myself to work out. To make this journey a little easier, I have learned a few tricks to motivate myself to work out when I’m feeling a little uninspired. Here are my top 10 tricks that you can use to motivate yourself when you need a bit of help too!
1. Treat yourself to a meal
If I’m doing a morning workout, I’ll allow myself to go out for breakfast/brunch afterwards and get a fun smoothie bowl or poached eggs. Makes for a cute Instagram and is also a great way to start your day! Or, if it’s an evening workout, I’ll get a fun dinner as a reward – whether that’s buying the ingredients to cook something nicer I don’t normally have (like some halloumi) or a healthy takeaway dinner from somewhere local.
2. Try a new class
It can get a little boring going to the gym and doing the same workout or class each time. Try mixing it up a little bit and try a new class! Have you tried Zumba, Pilates or Spin yet? You may just love it!
3. Check your goals
Was your goal to lose 5 kilos by the end of 2018 or to be a couple of inches down on your waist? Or are you aiming to move up on one of the weights machines at the gym? How are you going with those goals? The only way you’ll get closer is to push yourself to work out!
4. Listen to a quick podcast
There are so many awesome health & fitness podcasts that are so motivating. When you have a moment, find one you like or download something new to try. Just listening to people talk about their journey or how they workout might just be what you need.
5. Play a video from your last workout
Next time you finish your workout, take a quick video of yourself reminding yourself of how much better you feel for having completed it. Then, when you’re not feeling motivated – you can use it to remind you of that feeling you get when you’ve finished a workout and you’re proud of yourself!
6. Go with a friend or partner
I’m really lucky that my partner and I usually workout together – as it means on those days where I’m not feeling motivated, I have him to push me out the door to the gym – and I can do the same for him! If you don’t have the same setup, organise to go to the gym with a friend or someone else who can make you accountable. Plan to meet your partner at the gym after work – that way, you won’t want to bail on them either!
7. Non-edible reward
If you’re also watching what you eat, an edible reward might not work for you. However, you can also reward yourself with something else fun to give you that little push. Have you been hanging out to get some new leggings or even a spot of new makeup? Allow yourself to a treat if you go to the gym! You deserve it.
8. Spice up your workout
Do you usually follow the same routine with your workout? Check out some of our workout ideas on this blog or head on over to Pinterest – there are so many fun challenges and new workout ideas that there may be things you’ve never thought of.
9. Check out people who inspire you
I try to follow people who are positive influences to me, whether through their quick fun workout videos or positive messages and motivation quotes – or people who have a life that I can use as inspiration. Before bailing on your workout, have a quick look at their Instagram and think about how they’d handle being in your position or what they’d say to you at this moment.
10. Do a shorter workout
Instead of being overwhelmed by your standard workout, just commit to something small. Say that you’ll spend 15 minutes on the treadmill or you’ll just use a couple of the weights machines. You’ll find that once you start, you’ll want to work out for a little bit longer – starting is the tricky part!
Remember – it’s totally okay to have an off day. If you don’t feel like working out – you are allowed to do nothing. If you find that this starts happening a little bit more than usual and you’re not moving enough – maybe consider why it is that you’re struggling with your motivation. For every other day – try one of these tips!
I hope that at least one of these works for you. Do you have any other tips that you use for motivation? If so, please let us know below!
